1896 - the founding year of the Archenhold Observatory.
The enormous telescope
Its landmark is the enormous telescope, the longest refracting telescope on Earth. It is 21 meters long. Originally, the telescope was only meant to be an exhibition piece for the Berlin Industrial Show in 1896.
With permission being granted to let the telescope stand there "till further notice" within the Treptower Park, in fact a public observatory was created. The operators became the "Association of Friends of the Treptow Observatory e.V." (registered association). Friedrich Simon Archenhold became the chairman of the association.
The operation of the observatory was started within the timber construction of the exhibition building. Available was an astronomy exhibition, a lecture room and even a small library. The observatory was quickly accepted by the citizens of Berlin. Above all, school classes soon came in large numbers to the observatory. This encouraged Archenhold’s certainty that the observatory makes an important contribution to national education in Berlin.
